GRANTED, formerly Wish Upon A Star, is a community based nonprofit located in Evansville Indiana. Our organization was founded in 1985 by two local residents with a mission of granting once in a lifetime Wishes to area children between the ages of 3 and 18 who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening or terminal condition.
Wish Upon A Star began in 1985 when co-founders Carl Wallace and Carolyn Pfaffmann joined forces to help Jamie Petty, a local child who had been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Jamie had a dream of visiting Walt Disney World in Florida so that she could meet Mickey Mouse. Thanks to their efforts and the support of the Tri-State community, Jamie’s wish came true. Our founders’ plan was to give any remaining funds to the still young, but rapidly growing national wish granting organization. Upon careful review though, they noticed a gap in service. Once the Wish was completed, Jamie was still sick, and the family was still struggling in many ways. Through this experience, Wish Upon A Star was born, with the mission of granting amazing Wishes and then supporting the family long afterward through a variety of programs.
With much love, dedication, and careful stewardship, Wish Upon A Star survived and continuously granted Wishes for more than three decades. In mid-2016, we were selected by the Evansville Design Group as the 2016-17 Design For Good organization. This was an incredible honor to be selected by this amazing group of such talented professionals. It was an enormous undertaking, but after many months of hard work, Wish Upon A Star re-branded as Granted, complete with a new name and look. Although the look is much different, this positions us to proudly carry on the same good work and mission for the next three decades and beyond!
“When I was diagnosed with cancer at age 5, on top of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Wish Upon A Star granted me an above ground pool that I could use for therapy. Ehlers-Danlose Syndrome is a connective tissue disorder causing all joints to dislocate. I had many orthopedic surgeries, and recovery & therapy was hard. That pool got me so motivated. To this day I am so beyond grateful for what they did for me. I definitely know what it’s like for these kids to be able to make a wish and take a trip knowing you’re not traveling to see a doctor. They all deserve to have every moment possible to live life like every other child without a care in the world. You guys are great!” ~Crystal
